Why Is My Website Not Showing On Google? 10 Common Fixes

Website Not Showing On Google blog header, Business Mate

You’ve built a website, but when you search for your business, it’s nowhere to be seen. It’s one of the most common and frustrating problems small business owners face. The good news is that it usually comes down to a handful of fixable issues.

Here are the 10 most common reasons your website is not showing on Google, how to check each one, and how to fix it.

First, Check If Google Knows Your Site Exists

Type site:yourdomain.co.uk into Google (with your own web address). If your pages appear, Google has indexed them and the problem is ranking. If nothing appears, Google hasn’t indexed your site yet, and fixes 1 to 5 below are where to start.

10 Reasons Your Website Is Not Showing On Google

1. Your Website Is Brand New

Google can take days or weeks to find and index a new site. Fix: set up Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for your main pages.

2. Your Site Is Telling Google Not To Index It

Many website builders and WordPress have a setting that hides a site from search engines while it’s being built, and it’s often left switched on. Fix: in WordPress, go to Settings, then Reading, and make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked. Other builders have a similar setting under SEO or site visibility.

3. Your Robots.txt File Is Blocking Google

A small file called robots.txt tells search engines what they can crawl. One wrong line can block your whole site. Fix: visit yourdomain.co.uk/robots.txt. If you see “Disallow: /” under “User-agent: *”, your whole site is blocked and the line needs removing.

4. You Haven’t Submitted A Sitemap

A sitemap is a list of your pages that helps Google find them. Fix: most SEO plugins create one automatically. Submit it in Google Search Console under Sitemaps.

5. Google Has Flagged A Problem

Rarely, a site gets a manual action for breaking Google’s guidelines, or a security issue if it’s been hacked. Fix: check the Manual actions and Security issues reports in Search Console and follow Google’s instructions to resolve them.

6. You’re Targeting Searches That Are Too Competitive

If your site is indexed but doesn’t rank, you may be competing for very broad searches like “accountant” against huge national brands. Fix: target more specific searches your customers actually use, such as your service plus your area, and give each service its own page.

7. Your Pages Don’t Have Enough Useful Content

A page with a heading and two lines of text gives Google very little to work with. Fix: explain your services clearly, answer common customer questions and include the words people search for, written naturally.

8. Other Websites Don’t Link To You

Links from other trusted websites tell Google your business is real and relevant. Fix: get listed in reputable UK business directories, join local business groups and ask suppliers or partners to link to you.

9. Your Site Is Slow Or Has Technical Errors

Slow pages, broken links and errors make it harder for Google to crawl your site and put visitors off. Fix: test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights, compress large images and fix broken links. Our free SEO audit checklist walks you through the main checks.

10. You’re Not Showing On Google Maps

For local searches, Google often shows a map with three businesses before the normal results. If you don’t have a Google Business Profile, you won’t appear there. Fix: claim and complete your profile. Follow our guide on how to set up a Google Business Profile.

How Long Does It Take To Show On Google?

Once Google can find your site, indexing can happen within days. Ranking well for searches that bring in customers usually takes longer, often a few months of steady work on content, your Google Business Profile, reviews and links. Local searches are usually the quickest win for small businesses.
